Equatorial Gem. Mountain Gorillas. Haven for Exotic Creatures.

An equatorial gem rich in lakes, volcanoes, savanna and wildlife, Rwanda is one of Africa’s smallest countries boasting the full gamut of safari experiences. Famous for its magnificent mountain gorillas in the cloud forests of the Virunga Mountains in Volcanoes National Park – home to an estimated one-third of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population – Rwanda has even more to offer.

Spend your first day in the capital of Kigali; a vibrant, sprawling city with the Genocide Museum a poignant reminder of how far this country has come since 1994 and the end of its civil war. In the southwest lies Nyungwe National Park, with ancient montane rainforest said to be one of the oldest woodlands in Africa. A prime habitat for chimpanzees and 12 other primate species, it provides a haven for creatures that are rare or extinct elsewhere including mona monkeys, silver monkeys, a huge troop of the secretive owl-faced colobus monkeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys with their bright-blue testicles. Akagera National Park in the east, near the Tanzanian border has herds of giraffe, zebra and elephant, and has reintroduced lion and black rhino. Virgin safari territory with its own tented camp, this is subtropical savanna at its finest.
